What is it, and what is it used for?

An important constituent of Hypoxis / the African potato is a glycoside called hypoxoside, which once in the human gut, readily converts to the aglycone, rooperol, a potent antioxidant. The plant also contains various sterols (ß-sitosterol, stigmasterol) and their glycosides (sterolins).

Sterols/sterolins may be involved in modulating the immune and stress response. This makes them extremely valuable adjuncts a wide range of stress-mediated disorders, as well as immune dysregulation and inflammatory diseases.
